Why Choose Concrete Solutions for Retaining Walls in Thunder Bay

Retaining walls in Northwestern Ontario face punishing conditions: lateral earth weight, saturated spring clay soils, and brutal frost cycles. Without proper gravel backfill, geogrid anchoring, and continuous drainage, poorly built walls bow, crack, or overturn within just a few seasons. At Concrete Solutions, we engineer and construct retaining structures built to endure for decades.

We build poured reinforced concrete walls, architectural segmental retaining blocks (such as Allan Block), and tiered garden slope systems. Every wall incorporates non-woven geotextile separation, washed 3/4" clear stone drainage corridors, and perforated weeping tile outlets to eliminate hydrostatic pressure behind the wall face.

What Sets Us Apart

  • Engineered drainage with clear stone & weeping tile
  • Geogrid soil reinforcement for high surcharge loads
  • Poured reinforced concrete & modular block solutions
  • Permit coordination & structural engineering compliance
Engineered retaining wall construction in Thunder Bay by Concrete Solutions

Our Retaining Wall Engineering Process

Every retaining wall is constructed from a solid footing up, engineered against hydrostatic pressure.

01

Slope & Surcharge Analysis

We calculate bank slope, soil type, and above-wall weight loads to determine footing depth, setback angles, and drainage routes.

02

Trenching & Base Compaction

We excavate into stable subgrade and mechanically compact a level Granular A crushed stone footing pad below finished grade.

03

Wall Erection & Geogrid

Blocks or formwork are laid plumb and level, pinning high-tensile geogrid reinforcement sheets into the backfill bank.

04

Clear Stone & Drain Tile

We install perforated weeping tile, backfill with clean 3/4" clear aggregate wrapped in filter fabric, and cap the wall.

Frequently Asked Questions

Key considerations on retaining wall heights, building permits, materials, and drainage in Thunder Bay.

Under the Ontario Building Code, retaining walls exceeding 1 meter (approximately 3.3 feet) in exposed height or walls carrying a surcharge load (such as a driveway or structure above) require engineered design and a municipal permit. We manage the permitting and engineering requirements on your behalf.
Hydrostatic water pressure. When water collects behind a wall without adequate drainage, saturated soil expands and exerts tremendous lateral force. In winter, this moisture freezes and pushes the wall outward. We prevent this by installing clean 3/4" clear stone backfill and continuous perforated weeping tile.
Both deliver exceptional longevity when properly built. Segmental blocks (such as Allan Block) provide versatile curving lines and stone aesthetics with dry-stacked flexibility. Poured concrete walls deliver monolithic structural load capacity, ideal for tight property lines and heavy vehicular driveways.
Yes. Terracing a steep hill with retaining tiers converts steep, unusable land into level recreational lawns, functional parking areas, or beautiful multi-level garden patios while permanently halting soil erosion.
